Microphysiometric systems use microsensors for measurement of e.g. extracellular acidification or cellular respiration to monitor cellular vitality in a label-free manner. With the addition of a live-support system, time-resolved monitoring of living cells is possible and an automated fluidic system allows addition and removal of chemical substances such as new drugs. The development during the last decades made microphysiometry a promising tool for use in experimental and clinical pharmacology and toxicology.
